Colonial gardens existed not for pleasure, but for the individual plants’ practical uses in the home. Leslie Martino, a landscape designer and historian, will explore the evolution of these gardens from the earliest settlers to those of 1776 and early independence.
Leslie Martino is a landscape designer with Natureworks Horticultural Services in Northford, Conn. She studied landscape design and landscape history at Harvard University’s Landscape Institute and has created several colonial-inspired gardens for historical societies in Connecticut and lectures frequently on the history and development of American gardens.
